Peace To Mateo

  • Peace To Mateo (aka Matt Black) is a Detroit audio/visual artist and founder of Young Heavy Souls. Black launched YHS as an imprint to release his music in the spring of 2011.

2015 marked an evolution in Black’s sound when he released the self-titled Peace to Mateo album. The project is a sample-based production showcase with a blend of instrumental hip-hop, electronic, and dance music. He played shows supporting this release in California (at Serenity Gathering Music Festival and on Culture Remixed Radio), Chicago and Detroit.

2016 saw the release of Bouquet, a 10-song lofi beat tape that featured a more minimal, focused sound.

The biggest shift in sound came in the form of his 2018 full length album Some Strange Reason. Black describes the album as "an atmospheric blend of trip-hop, and futuristic boom-bap with a cinematic sensibility." This was Black’s first sample-free project, featuring a host of guest musicians providing pieces to the collage of sound.

The past few years has seen Black’s attention fixed heavily on managing Young Heavy Souls, and now, with the help of producers Illingsworth and Eliot Lipp, also running the Naturally Digital and Old Tacoma Records imprints respectively.

On the debut Naturally Digital compilation Maiden Voltage Black revisits and perfects a sound he explored back with the Bouquet album. His track Counting Stars is a chilly jazz flip that heralds a new era for the producer and his eclectic so palette.
